Coming into SXSW from the New York area, I was lucky enough to have many friends who fled the snow to Texas. Needless to say, the food recommendations from these former New Yorkers have been excellent. Wendy, a former room mate told me that she would take me to the best place for tacos…EVER! I accepted the challenge and allowed her to take me over the bridge, away from the SXSW festivities to the South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery to eat at Torchy’s Damn Good Tacos. I knew Wendy would not let me down.
We hopped in her car and made the trip. The park has three trucks: Holy Cacao, Man Bites Dog and finally Torchy’s Tacos. The parking lot is treacherous. If you drive I suggest you take care; there will be little kids, puppies and food aficionados running around (please make sure not to hit us). The choices at Torchy’s are quite nice and nothing on the menu is over $8. You can choose to destroy the political party of your choice (Republican: grilled jalapeno sausage, cheese and pico de gallo; Democrat: shredded beef barbacoa, avocado, queso fresco, cilantro, onions and lime). You can get back at Mr. Pink for not tipping well (guajillo grilled ahi tuna, cabbage fresca, cilantro, queso fresco and lime wedge). You can even go all out trailer park (fried chicken, green chilies, lettuce, pico de gallo and cheese) and make it a trashy trailer park by removing the lettuce and adding more cheese. I ordered the Mr. Pink and the Trailer Park – trashy.
The tacos were simply scrumptious. The fried chicken taco was greasy, yummy, spicy deliciousness. Mr. Pink was off the hook. The tacos come in two tortillas as these bundles of joy are fragile and require the double enclosure. I enhanced both with pico de gallo (a great choice). If you like soda (I do not drink the stuff) you can have the Mexican stuff that is made with no high fructose corn syrup. Water is free and you can grab some from the cooler next to the truck. The place is fun and I would highly recommend it as a place to eat during SXSW. Yum.
