Wine Lovers Asked to Donate Corks for RecyclingThe capital city of Annapolis, Maryland and its Department of Neighborhood and Environmental Programs will be collecting wine corks for recycling through the end of October. Partnering with TerraCycle, the corks will be turned into bulletin boards and resold at national retailers as environmentally friendly products.  The city will get a small stipend for each cork collected.

Corks are being solicited from individuals and businesses, but the primary source of corks is expected to be local hotels and restaurants, such as the Boatyard Bar & Grill,  Galway Bay, Lewnes Steakhouse and The Rockfish.  Last year, Annapolis collected more than 15,000 corks and hopes they can exceed that number during this campaign.

TerraCycle works with non-profit clubs, churches and government entities to collect trash and turns it into useful products.  The organizations earn money for each item collected and the trash is saved from the landfills.

Besides corks, TerraCycle collects food packing from Nabisco, Frito-Lay, Stoneyfield Farms and Malt-o-Meal Cereal for recycling into useful items.  Many of their recycled products can be found at retailers such as Walmart, Target, Home Depot and K-Mart.
