Gold for the dog

Gourmet hot dog vendor, Noriki Tamura, and his two Japadog stands on Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver, captured gold with sidewalk eaters at the Olympic games. Frenzied Japadog fans, from competitors to street smart journalists, as well as celebrities like Steven Seagal, Ice Cube, and Anthony Bourdain, stood in all-day lines at the two Burrard Street carts for Tamura’s homemade gourmet sausages.

Japadogs are made from turkey, pork, and Kobe beef, and are topped with creative combinations of Wasabi, seaweed, bonito flakes, daikon, nori, as well as sauces like teriyaki, tonkatsu and soy. Tamura and his helpers grilled and topped every individual Japadog.

Among the grilled Japadog selections were the Misomayo, a turkey sausage topped with radish sprouts, sesame miso, and a Japanese mayo; the Kurobuta, a pork hot dog with soy, daikon relish, and seaweed; an Oroshi, a traditional bratwurst topped with green onions, grated daikon, nori, and teriyaki sauce; and an Okonomi, a flattened Berkshire pork sausage garnished with cabbage and bonito flakes. When a Tokyo TV reporter asked if there was a dog honoring Japanese figure skater Mao Asada, Tamura created the Mao — made from expensive Kobe beef, sprinkled with tonkatsu sauce, a ginger-flavored dipping sauce, and topped with tiny shreds of red and gold yuba cut into the shape of tiny Canadian maple leafs. The Japadogs sold for between $4 and $7; the Mao sold for $10.

Noriki Tamura plans to set up shop in New York. “I’m planning for the end of the year,” Tamura told The Province. “We will expand to Los Angeles too. But we have to choose [which city first].”
