Food Day 2011

Food Day Logo Food Day 2011Today is Food day, and this day aims to bring awareness about how we eat, our resources, and our food.

Food Day 2011 is headed by Honorary Co-Chairs Senator Tom Harkin (from Iowa) and Representative Rosa DeLauro (from the third District of Connecticut—we’re a bit surprised by this since she introduced Bill HR 875, The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 where people growing their own vegetables could receive a fine of up to $1,000,000) and sponsored by Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). Since 1971, the CSPI has been behind the success of different nationwide initiatives such as better nutrition, safer food and food labeling for America.

Farmers Market Food Day 2011Food Day aims to alter the American diet, which consists of salty, highly caloric processed and packaged foods, fast food meals, factory-made treats, and sodas.  The way we eat is not making us healthier, it is making us sick. With our mass-consumption, we are also hurting our resources—the farmers, the animals, and the environment.

Events from different regions will circulate before, during, and after October 24, 2011, inline with the Food Day celebration. All you have to do is find a local coordinator in your region and see what events are taking place in your area. There will be symposiums, food fairs, tasting events and various food programs which all aim to bring food awareness and consciousness to people. America needs real food, sustainable food, healthy food.
