The September 2009 issue of Travel + Leisure is hitting the streets with the results of its in-flight food survey. Virgin America has taken top honors as having the best domestic airline food in the world.
The relatively young, California-based airline captured first place in the survey not only because of the quality and assortment of the food, but also because passengers are able to order what they want, when they want it, through Virgin America’s in-flight entertainment seatback system. Other U.S. carriers that serve meals do so through a push cart that travels down the aisle.
“We’re honored to receive this feedback from Travel + Leisure readers – those who fly the most and expect the very best,” said Virgin America Senior Vice President of People and In-flight Frances Fiorillo, in a press release issued by the company. “Virgin America’s goal is to bring travelers more choices in-flight. In keeping with our California roots, our fresh, seasonal meal items and snacks offer guests convenient, tasty and reasonably priced options they can order any time right from their seatback – without having to worry about grabbing something ahead of time.”
Meals on Virgin America cost between $7 and $10 in the main cabin and are complimentary in their first class equivalent. Some of the menu items include a gourmet fruit and cheese plate, hummus and pita chips, wild berry yogurt parfaits, Southwestern chicken hand rolls, steak sandwiches, turkey Florentine hand rolls, Muffaletta sandwiches and a Thai vegetable salad.
In addition to Virgin America’s food menu, beverages and cocktails are also available for purchase. Travelers can order a variety of special-order drinks, such as iced cappuccinos and eco-friendly cocktails from their seatback, and watch as they are mixed on-demand.
Virgin America offers over 100 flights a day and services San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C., Seattle, Las Vegas, San Diego, Boston and Orange County.
Congratulations, Virgin America!
