Sure to Spice Up Your Love Life

Aphrodisiacs, named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of sensuality, are foods that are thought to induce sexual arousal and desire.  Part myth, mixed with anecdotal and scientific evidence, those who consume some of these time-honored substances are said to be blessed with long and active sex lives. With Valentine’s Day coming up next month, this is a great opportunity to plan some special dinners with the aphrodisiacs of your choice.   They’re also  useful in warming up cold winter nights!  Here are the top ten on the FriendsEAT.com list.

istock almonds 150x150 Warm up the Winter with AphrodisiacsAlmonds– Renowned for their sensual qualities, the scent of almonds has been known to evoke passion in women across all cultures. A common ingredient in soaps and creams, adding toasted almonds to sautéed vegetables may increase sexual vitality and feelings of well-being.  The ancient Egyptians used to eat 20 almonds with a glassful of honey prior to bedtime to elevate passion. Sprinkle some on a salad or grab a handful as a late night snack that will never intervene with passion.

Aguacate 150x150 Warm up the Winter with AphrodisiacsAvocados– So sensual and erotic were avocados, that Catholic priests allegedly forbade their parishioners from eating them.  The Aztecs dubbed avocados “ahucatl,” which means “testicle” no doubt because of their suggestive shape.  The Spaniards are credited with spreading the news about their stimulating powers. Try them as guacamole, slice some and serve them on the side with soup or make a cold cucumber and avocado soup.

basil 150x150 Warm up the Winter with AphrodisiacsBasil – This aromatic herb is said to stimulate the sex drive and increase fertility.  It also helps promote good circulation and produces a feeling of well being. The scent of basil is gentle yet intoxicating. Get romantic and make a bouquet of roses and basil, the scent will fill your home to set the mood. Then hit the kitchen and make sure to include tortellini with pesto on your menu. This is sure to guarantee a cozy, romantic evening for two!

Black Caviar 150x150 Warm up the Winter with AphrodisiacsBlack Caviar – For those who can afford it, black caviar is the perfect aphrodisiac.  Black caviar is super high in zinc, vitamin A and Omega-3 fatty acids, which help to increase blood flow, stimulate testosterone production and promote sperm development.  This is a great food to invite a friendly stork visit.  Caviar comes from “khav-yar,” the Persian word meaning “cake of strength.” Pair this up with a little bubbly and you will have your loved one melting in your arms.

Chilis 150x150 Warm up the Winter with AphrodisiacsChili Peppers – Chili peppers, especially the red ones, help stimulate circulation.  Eating these spicy morsels has an aftermath that mimics the sexual response, thanks to capsaicin, which induces a temporary high. They also put your immune system in gear to have you nice and healthy for the big night. The kick that you get from chilies is fiery in many ways, as it stimulates endorphins as well as your mouth!

Chocolate 150x150 Warm up the Winter with AphrodisiacsChocolate– Dubbed “the elixir of love” by the famous Venetian womanizer Casanova, the infamous lover downed steaming mugs of cocoa prior to one of his many conquests. Thought to elevate the libido because of its serotonin levels, chocolate increases emotional well being.  It also contains caffeine, which gives an extra burst of energy. However, the secret weapon in the chocolate arsenal is phenylethylamine, a natural neurotransmitter stimulant. High levels of phenylethylamine are associated with love.

eggs 150x150 Warm up the Winter with AphrodisiacsEggs– A symbol of fertility, eggs are said to enhance the libido, especially if eaten raw before a night of romance.  Although not everyone fancies their eggs raw, try some scrambled eggs for two, for a sexy late entrée. High in certain B vitamins, eggs also help balance hormone levels and are said to eliminate stress pre-wedding jitters. Want to make them a bit more special? Try making Oeufs en Meurette for a very special breakfast treat.

Figs 150x150 Warm up the Winter with AphrodisiacsFigs – With claims that figs used to be a favorite of Cleopatra, these sensual fruits go back to Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden.  This fleshy fruit has been known to be a powerful sexual stimulant. In fact, in some European countries, wedding guests bring figs to throw at the newlyweds to encourage fertility. If you want to try an easy and delectable fig recipe try some Figs in Syrup or for something completely sinful try Porto Figs Stuffed with Almonds and Chocolates.

Ginger 150x150 Warm up the Winter with AphrodisiacsGinger – This spicy root has been used an aphrodisiac for centuries because it warms the body, increases the heart rate and stimulates circulation. In fact, it mimics how the body reacts during a night of passionate romance. It is also said that ginger has antibacterial properties, no doubt one of the reasons it is so often used with sushi. Grate a little over a dessert or use as an accent flavor in Asian cuisine to spice up your sex life.

Oysters 150x150 Warm up the Winter with AphrodisiacsOysters – Men find oysters visually stimulating because of their resemblance to parts of the female body.  However, oysters also contain high amounts of zinc, which help increase sexual potency.  Without enough zinc, sperm count and fertility are affected.  Oysters are also high in iron, which increases stamina.  Aphrodite (the goddess of love and beauty) also sprang from an oyster shell, so there is a natural connection between oysters and love!
