Keep the Holidays Happy
For many of us the holidays are ripe with office parties and family celebrations at which cocktails will be served generously. Unfortunately, the holiday season is one of the deadliest times of the year for alcohol-related car accidents because of the rise in the number of special events and parties where drinking is involved. This year may prove especially hazardous since many are under unprecedented economic stress.
Our staff suggests traveling in groups if possible, with an appointed designated driver. Here are five delicious nonalcoholic beverages you can serve at parties or recommend to the host.
1. Apple Spritzer
Pour apple juice into an old-fashioned glass filled with 3 to 5 ice cubes and add soda. Stir before serving.
2. Spicy Virgin Mary
If you crave the spiciness of a Bloody Mary without the alcohol, try this tasty variation. Yields 6-8 servings.
Ingredients:
1 Q tomato or vegetable juice
1-2 t horseradish
1 T Worcestershire or soy sauce
1 oz lemon or lime juice
1-3 t Tabasco sauce
1-3 t black pepper
1 t celery salt, and Ice
Stir all of the ingredients together in the pitcher or bowl. Taste and add more horseradish, tabasco and/or spices as needed. Chill and serve over ice. Garnish with lemon/lime wedges and a celery stick.
3. Pina Colada Punch
Blend pineapple juice, coconut syrup, coconut cream and cinnamon in a blender until creamy. Place in refrigerator or add to a punch bowl. Add ice-cream and allow to dissolve. Add pineapple soda, an ice ring, and thin orange slices.
4. Coffee Frappe
Ingredients:
18 crushed ice cubes
7 oz doubled strength chilled coffee
2 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp vanilla, hazelnut, or other syrup
Place the ice, coffee, sugar and syrup in a blender. Blend until the frappe is smooth. Pour into a large, tall glass. Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream.
5. Club Soda and Angostura Bitters
Pour club soda in a fancy champagne glass and add a splash of bitters. Your beverage will resemble rose champagne.
