Cutting out coupons from the newspaper to save money on your weekly grocery bill has been relegated to analog history now that technology has redefined coupon clipping. Mobile coupon apps save you money, and may even earn you cash back. Each app has unique features and some may offer better savings over others based on your particular shopping style and store.

Some experts claim the best app for you may depend on where you live. “Different apps offer coupons at different stores, so your success using your smart phone to get coupons will depend on the supermarkets in your area and your shopping list.”

Top 10 Coupon Apps

1) Checkout 51

Every Thursday morning, Checkout 51 updates with a new list of offers. All you have to do is pick the ones you like, purchase them at any store, and upload a photo of your receipt through their mobile app or website. When your account reaches $20, they send you a check.

2) Ibotta

Users upload grocery receipts after buying select items (offers change weekly) and receive cash in return. When the total reaches a certain threshold, Ibotta transfers it into a PayPal or Venmo account. If you don’t have an online payment account, Ibotta also lets you cash out in the form of an iTunes, Starbucks, Redbox, or Regal gift card.

3) Coupons.com

Coupons.com (Android, iOS) allows you to bring the savings straight to your smartphone. You can access thousands of promotional coupons and codes to copy and paste, drag and drop, print out or add to your relevant loyalty cards. Notifications can be set to alert you of nearby deals when shopping, and you can also pull store information on nearby retailers straight to your phone.

4) The Coupons App

The Coupons App delivers real-time coupons and updates for stores, restaurants and gas stations. Free to users of Android, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices, it has a built-in barcode reader that lets you scan a barcode and search for deals on that particular product. Babble included this mobile coupons app in its list of 50 Best Apps for Parents in 2012.

5) Grocery IQ

This app is best if you tend to stick to the same list week after week. Start by making your list (which is automatically saved) and the app will match items with applicable coupons. Add items to your list by typing them in, scrolling through the master list, scanning a bar code, or speaking them. The coupons come from the same giant inventory that’s used with the Coupons.com app, and you get them in the same ways: by printout and loyalty card.

6) Retail Me Not

RetailMeNot offers an all-in-one discount and coupon hunting app with deals from more than 50,000 retailers and food offers from thousands of nationwide and local restaurants. Users can look up the best or most popular deals as well as personalized offers, and can save a list of their favorite establishments so that the app can notify users of new offers. Additionally, location-based features allow you to quickly search for deals at nearby shopping destinations, malls and eateries.

7) Supermarket Coupons

The Supermarket Coupons app is a large, searchable coupon database and operates just like a search engine. Unlike other coupon apps, Supermarket Coupons lets you search for coupons for specific items, such as diapers, chips or detergent. The app then yields coupons from various retailers who are currently discounting the products.

8) SavingStar

With SavingStar (Android, iOS) and your store loyalty card, users can take advantage of of digital eCoupons redeemable at thousands of groceries and drug stores nationwide. Simply select the coupons you want to use, link them to your store loyalty card, and then make the purchase. The price will remain the same, but SavingStar logs your accumulated credits. Once a $5 threshold is reached, SavingStar then pays out to your bank account, PayPal or Amazon Gift Card.

9) ShopKick

If you’re a dedicated mall rat, ShopKick is the app for you. This rewarding app (Android, iOS) for local mall and participating store shoppers sends ‘kicks’ whenever you visit stores, scan items or make a purchase. You can then redeem ‘kicks’ for gift cards, discounts and other promotional items. Earn more kicks by inviting friends or linking a Mastercard or Visa credit card.

10) Cellfire

Cellfire sends coupons directly to your loyalty cards. (To add to a card, tap “My cards,”then tap the green bar.) Browse through the deals and tap the ones you want. They’re saved to your card to scan at checkout. The list of stores is limited. But if there’s a store near you, it’s definitely worth downloading the app. We found 21 coupons for ShopRite, for example. You can use the app without registering, but members get access to bigger, better deals.
