Thanksgiving Turkey without the stuffing, sacrilege

One of the most beloved dishes at the Thanksgiving table is the stuffing.  A mix of seasoned vegetables and starches that is traditionally cooked within the cavity of the turkey, stuffing can be traced back to the Roman Empire.  Today, however, it is most widely associated with Thanksgiving.  Although a basic stuffing is made from bread cubes, vegetables and seasonings, there are hundreds of variations that contain an endless combination of flavors, including oysters, cornbread, rice, pecans, sausage, bacon, dried fruit, potatoes, apples and more.

With the advent of Stove Top Stuffing in 1972, many Americans abandoned their family recipes in favor of the six-ounce, sodium-laden box, but homemade stuffing is once again “in.”   Here are six of FriendsEat.com’s favorite recipes to accompany your Thanksgiving meal.

Basic Thanksgiving Stuffing – easy and delicious, even a beginner can make this one.

Good ol’ Southern Cornbread Stuffing – a classic recipe found on many Southern tables.

Herbed Oyster Stuffing – a traditional stuffing recipe using oysters, bacon and fresh herbs.

Organic Vegetarian Stuffing – farm fresh ingredients will complement the organic Thanksgiving table.

Vegan Bagel Stuffing – a vegan recipe that goes together in a flash.
