Help Haiti By Helping Locally

As we continue to follow recovery and relief efforts in Haiti in the aftermath of that country’s most devastating earthquake in more than 200 years, we must not forget our Haitian-American brothers and sisters here in the United States.  Countless numbers are anxiously awaiting word about the fate of their friends and relatives who are still among the missing.

Many Haitian-Americans are in the food service industry, operating restaurants, neighborhood coffee shops, bakeries and mom-and-pop groceries that serve the communities in which they live.  During this difficult time, we can all do our part to ease some of their pain by patronizing their establishments and supporting their economic survival.  Many of the grass roots relief efforts were started in these small Haitian neighborhoods.

If you’ve never had Haitian food, this is a good time to acquaint yourself with their unique style of cooking, which mixes elements of French and African cuisine.  Many Haitian restaurants are hidden away and do very little advertising, so you may need to ask around for directions or recommendations.  Here are a few larger Haitian eateries that are enjoying support from dining patrons:

Chef Creole ” three locations in the Miami area, serving Haitian food with a Creole touch.

Chez LeBebe ” Celebrating 25 years serving delicious and bountiful Haitian food, this Miami landmark offers dinners for less than $10.

Kombit ” Owned and operated by three sisters, Kombit offers some of the finest Haitian food in the city.  This Brooklyn restaurant is homey, intimate and welcoming.

TiGeorge’s Chicken ”  Chef Tigeorge in Los Angeles remains true to his Haitian roots by serving up traditional dishes that are native to the Caribbean nation, such as conch, goat, taro root, squash soup, rice, beans, Haitian cola and more.

Find your own neighborhood Haitian businesses and support them as we all pull together to help the earthquake recovery.
