Spam Survives the Economy
As families struggle to stay afloat economically, sales of Spam, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, Jell-O, Kool-Aid, Hormel Chili — which dates back to the Great Depression — and “Dinty-Moore brand canned stews” have shot through the roof; product sales have increased by double digits.
“These products created strong consumer demand because of their great value proposition,” a Hormel company representative said.
The increase in demand for “lower-priced products” prompted Hormel to dedicate part of the production of an new Iowa processing plant exclusively to canned meats. As a result, Hormel gained higher sales results in the first half of its fiscal year.
