Rod Blagojevich Has Last Meal At Freddy’s Frozen Custard & SteakburgersBefore surrendering himself to the low-security federal prison in Littleton, Colorado, former Illinois Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich stopped for one last meal at the 50’s-style restaurant Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, [see video] where Freddy’s philosophy is to “Love, obey and thank your parents & teachers.”

According to restaurant owner Brian Pyle, Blagojevich ordered two Freddy’s Original Patty Melts, and lunched with three other people.

After lunch, Blagojevich reported to prison to begin serving a 14-year sentence on corruption convictions, including the charge of attempting to sell or trade Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat.

“I think it’s kind of surreal to him, but he seems in good spirits,” said Pyle, who said he shook the former governor’s hand as he left and told him, “stay strong.” He said Blagojevich thanked him.

WWII veteran Freddy Simon began offering Freddy’s savory steakburger back in the 1950’s in Wichita, Kansas. Freddy’s sons and restauranteur, Scott Redler, have worked to recreate 1950’s recipes.

“We certainly appreciate Mr. Blagojevich’s choice of restaurants for his last meal,”said COO Scott Redler. “I just wish he would have turned his cup to have the logo facing out while he posed for pictures”

According to Restaurant Magazine, Freddy’s operate six locations in the Wichita Metro area, two in the Kansas City market, and one in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Fifty-two franchise units serve other areas of Kansas and Oklahoma as well as Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas.

Freddy’s has store outlets in fifteen states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri New Mexico, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Florida, and Virginia.

An additional 35 locations are in various stages of construction. Chain Store Guide, a sister publication to Nation’s Restaurant News, listed Freddy’s as the Fifth Fastest Growing Chain Restaurant in the United States and Canada in 2010.

“More recently, Freddy’s was recognized by Technomics as the 5th fastest growing burger concept in the country. In the local community of the company’s founding, Freddy’s is a recipient of the 2011 Best in Business Award from the Wichita Business Journal.

“In 2011, Freddy’s was also named one of Entrepreneur Magazine’s Franchise 500 and #4 on the Franchise Chatter list of Under the Radar Franchises’ for 2012.”
