Sometimes you just don’t want to let people in on your secret. It took me quite a while to craft this write up on Cocotte. Why? Cocotte is tiny, the food is fairly priced and delicious, they have a fabulous wine list, AND the service has been spot on every time I visited.

Cocotte is this incredibly small restaurant not too far from Washington Square Park and Hudson Square. When you arrive, you walk down a small set of steps into a charming space whose walls are made of blackboard. On the walls one can find menus, and wine selections.

There is a bar that seats about 5-6 people where you can order affordable, yet perfectly lovely wines. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. When you get there, ask for Rafael. He works the room charming customers and making everyone feel at home.

The restaurant focuses on small plates from the South of France that are peppered with a touch of Basque country. The result is impeccable dishes that beg to be shared with friends. Here’s a look into my last visit to Cocotte.

Stuffed Baby Eggplants with onions and cheese: sinful and decadent, yet not greasy (as eggplant sometimes tends to be) $9.

Chorizo Stuffed Button Mushrooms: these are done wrong so often, it was a pleasure to have them done properly $9.

Lentils with Bacon & Shallot: this cold dish is everything a girl can ask for on a night out. Packed with protein and laced with bacon for flavor $9.

Cauliflower in a Bechamel gratin: this was naughty, sinful. Cocotte managed to make cauliflower sexy. Bravo! $9.

Incredibly tender pork cheeks in a tomato sauce, splendid $17.

Needless to say, I recommend Cocotte. It would be a perfect place for a first date, but it also made for a great spot to get together with friends. Get there early, or make reservations.
