Review: The Good and Best Wine Bottle Openers

If there is one thing frustrating about drinking wine, it is the moment you actually get to open one.  Unlike the movies where bottle opening seems like a simple flick of the wrist, getting the screw out somehow requires a secret handshake with your opener.

Whether you like your wine bottle opener old-fashioned or innovative, here’s a lowdown on some openers in the market today that will make you re-think how to really open a bottle of wine.  I have tested the usual corkscrews (Amco Swing-A-Way 757BK Wing Corkscrew, a Pulltap Double hinged Waiter Style Corkscrew), the electric openers (Oster’s Electric Wine Bottler Opener, Ozeri Nouveaux Electric Wine Opener), and the Swiss army knife-like opener from Metrokane.

Amco Swing-A-Way 757BK Wing Corkscrew

Now this looks like your common, run-of-the-mill wine bottle opener where you use a separate cutter to take out the foil and then figure out whether you start with the handle up or down.  Although I am not a fan of this type of opener, this is actually superior to the flimsy wine openers you can get in kitchenware stores.  However, this corkscrew is still subject to the usual weakness: it can tear up the cork if you don’t do it right which you will most likely do 50% of the time.

Lilyshome Pulltap Double hinged Waiter Style Corkscrew

This is not the fanciest corkscrew on the market but this one can work easy wonders.  Very convenient and very handy, this waiter-style corkscrew is not so hard to use.  It does not require that much elbow grease but you do need to be comfortable balancing the bottle while making sure that the screw goes right into the middle of the cork.  It took me a couple of tries and I eventually got the hang of using this thing professional server style. This is a handy tool when you want to take a bottle out of your house and you don’t want to carry a bigger bag just to make room for a corkscrew.

Metrokane Rabbit Wine Opener Tool Kit

This gadget will not only pull out the cork, it will cut the foil, remove the wax and seal the bottle.  It’s a complete set of wine convenience.  What’s great about this gadget is that it makes wine bottle opening quite high-tech even though it is not electric.  Just place the clamp, push the lever, and you’re done in three seconds.  Putting the cork back is not a task at all.  The design and engineering of this tool is so impressive that any male of the species will love this.  The big disadvantage, obviously, is the size — but with its polycarbonate and reinforced nylon material and matte finish, it will look great in any kitchen.  Just don’t hide it in the drawer, of course (as it can’t fit in mine with all the other kitchen gadgets).  The price will also make you think twice at almost $60.

Oster Electric Wine Bottle Opener

I love this wine opener — it reminds me of the current wireless, just-a-mouse-click-away culture.  This electric wine bottle opener has a handsome sleek finish with an attractive charging base.  The moment I saw it I wanted everything in my kitchen to look just like it.  The Oster electric wine bottle opener makes wine bottle opening a very automated task; just press the button and the there you go.  It also has a foil cutter that makes everything easy on the bottle (and on your evening).  It is easy on the budget too; at less than $20, Oster has definitely created an impressive gadget that is indeed a steal.

Review: The Good and Best Wine Bottle OpenersOzeri Nouveaux Electric Wine Opener

Although I did love Oster’s cordless electric bottle opener, this Ozeri tool made wine bottle opening as easy and as regular as breathing.  It is as handy as the waiter-style corkscrew yet it performs as wonderfully as Oster’s bottle opener.  What I love about Ozeris’ electric wine opener is you can actually see the magic happen because of its transparent corkscrew shell.  It can also stand on its own, thanks to its design, and when in use or when recharging, a built in soft blue light tells you when it is at work or not.  This electric wine opener can also open more bottles at a single charge; we used it at a huge party once, and we did not need to charge until about the 40th bottle.  Even though I don’t drink forty bottles of wine in one go, a single charge can go a long way.  The Ozeri Nouveaux Electric Wine Opener is a winner because it is functional, it is energy efficient, it is of amazing design, and the whole can fit comfortably in the palm of my hand.
