Feast of the Seven Fishes

Christmas is a big holiday for the Italian community. One of my favorite Italian Christmas celebrations is “The Feast of the Seven Fishes.” It is said the feast originates from the Southern part of Italy where families prepare different seafood dishes for their Christmas even celebration. Why seven? Nobody is really sure. Maybe it’s a reference to the creation of the world, or perhaps the seven deadly sins…but; Italian or not, you can celebrate this succulent feast.  Here are a few recipes to help you get started for your Feast of the Seven Fishes celebration.

Baked Stuffed Clams: This is one of my favorites. The bread crumbs add texture and seal in flavors during baking. A great appetizer year round.

Spaghetti with Mussels.  This spaghetti with mussels recipe is perfect for your Feast of the Seven Fishes celebration.  Top it off with some fresh Italian parsley and oregano to add freshness and aromatics. I can see this becoming a regular at your table.

Feast of the Seven FishesSalt Cod with Tomatoes and Capers. Feast of the Seven Fishes would not be complete without Sicily’s signature ingredient: baccalà (salted cod fish). This baccalà recipe takes a day of preparation to make sure you have the perfect blend of flavors and the right salt cod fish texture. The tomatoes and capers add simple yet very complementing flavors. Serve it warm or at room temperature as part of the buffet or as a second course during your Feast of the Seven Fishes celebration.
