Cargill Meat Solutions Corp., has recalled 8,500 pounds of ground beef due to E. coli O26.  The products in question are 42-pound cases of “GROUND BEEF FINE 90/10,” which hold three 14 pound chubs each. They have a “use/freeze by” date of “07/01/10,” and an identifying product code of “W69032.” They are also marked with “EST. 9400” inside the(ironically placed) USDA mark of inspection. The production date is  June 11, 2010. The ground beef was sent to Connecticut and Maryland distributors, but we don’t yet know what retailers they were sold to.  The USDA states “It is important to note that the above listed products were repackaged into consumer-size packages and sold under different retail brand names”. So basically, if you are in MD or CT, don’t eat ground beef. If you have ground beef in your freezer/fridge, they advise that you throw it out.

Two cases of E. coli sickness have been reported in Maine and one in New York. E. coli O26 can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and kidney failure. Children, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are in high risk.
