Real Beer Drinkers Drink Real Beer

Alright, so beer drinkers will drink any beer, especially those found in the fridge and clustered in six-pack cans.  But foodies — being a sort-of elitist lot they are — would rather have a different brew than order the usual Bud or Coors.  Not to offend the commercial beer drinkers, but a taste for beer requires a taste for the extra-ordinary.  And to those who love beer, have a look at these ten exciting brews you’ll need to have a mug of before you die.  They will make any Bud or Coors seem like water.  Seriously.

10. San Miguel Dark Lager

Any international and adventurous beer drinker will highly recommend this brew friendly from the Far East.  The San Miguel beer brand will send you to instant beer heaven.  There is enough bitter in these beers but refreshing enough that will make you want to drink more.  There is something familiar with the taste of the beer but with a bitterer hit and without the bitter aftertaste.  A great company while enjoying the usual greasefest everybody likes, but with this beer, it brings forth a certain sophistication.

9. Masala Mama India Pale Ale

The name of the beer alone will perk up the ears of any foodie, but taste-wise, the Masala Mama is a beer wonder with a hint of floral and pine, and the rich caramel undertones of malt.  Is it perfect for curry?  Why not?  Interestingly, for a beer with floral and pine undertones, it is not too bright for a beer.  Such mystery that intrigues any food- and beer-lover.

8. Guinness

Yes, some may counter that Guinness is like the Bud and the Coors of Ireland, but let’s face it, this porter-style Irish stout will always have a great following even among foodies.  It’s creamy, it’s roasty, and it’s something amateur beer drinkers will not easily build a taste for.  On the other hand, make sure to stick to the classic Guinness and don’t go for the friendly draught-type.  This macho drink does not need a mellower version.

7. Stella Artois

Beer snobs may hate this too commercial, swanky beer, but foodies love a bottle of Stella Artois because it is not too “beery”.  It is a safe beer to order, very crisp, and very standard-issue European lager.  Because it is too carbonated, it gives the impression of a bubbly wine but the mild malt taste will remind you that you are drinking a very nice, refreshing beer.

6. Professor Fritz Briem 1809 Berliner Weiss

If German beer seems intimidating because of its pronounced beer culture, its famed weissbier (wheat beer) variety is actually a very friendly and delicious lot.  This particular brew is fruity, and is in fact a good base for those “flavored”beers.  An unlikely flavor profile that is supposed to match those manly lederhosen!

5. Hitachino

Expect the Japanese to put a taste to the supposed-bitter taste of beer.  This one is tangier than the usual beer, a bit sour, and as usual with Asian flavors, the beer will remind you of ginger.  This is a very enjoyable beer for its odd yet affable taste, in addition to its interesting label that is normally quirky in Japanese design.

4. Smokestack Heritage Porter

This is one of those love it/hate it types of beer which foodies are likely willing to try.  Some may intellectualize the smoke-like taste of the beer as part of its many flavor profiles, but for some the taste can be summed up as a wet ashtray.  With its combination of silky texture and burnt malt taste, the Smokestack is charred, dark, bitter and sweet.  A true food snob’s idea for an elusive bottle.

With cane sugar from Mauritius, German malts and hops and Belgian yeast strain, what more can any foodie ask for?  The taste is very complex with these combinations, with a hint of fruit, the sweetness of malt, and the spiciness of yeast.  Not for the weak-hearted and definitely not for those who have a singular taste perception on beer.

2. Närke Kaggen Stormaktsporter

This Swedish beer matures like wine: aged with oak barrels, brewed with honey, and tastes better with age!  With its complex flavor of prunes and raisins mixed with espresso beans, toffee and vanilla, this beer will make you feel like you are having a heavenly dessert in the form of a full-bodied, malty liquid and a hint of soy sauce.  Although the taste profile may seem like it will send you straight to the nearest toilet, the beer is successful with its flavor combination that foodies will definitely scramble for.

1. Rochefort

Ah, the classic Rochefort produced by Belgian trappist monks who knows what a good beer taste like after centuries of tradition and hours of meditation.  With its Rochefort 6, Rochefort 8 and Rochefort 10, the Rochefort brand is sure to deliver different levels of intensity, from the combination of fruit and caramel to the strong presence of honeyed figs.  It’s dark and soft, peppery and warm, light and sweet.  A very cohesive but schizophrenic flavor profile.  Delicious.
