Look at those burgers before taking a bite
Maybe mischief-makers will think twice before playing a prank on the police.
Former Wendy’s employee Thomas Bender, will be spending the next six months in the slammer after he purposely placed his own pubic hair on a sandwich that was served to a sheriff’s deputy.
Bender, of Moundsville, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of food tampering. According to court records, he placed the hair on the sandwich knowing the intended victim was a law enforcement officer. Bender was sentenced to a year in jail, with six months suspended.
The local Magistrate hearing the case said it was a good thing the officer noticed the hair before he consumed the sandwich, because if he had eaten it, the punishment would have been much more severe. Although food tampering is a misdemeanor, the prosecutors said a jail sentence sends a clear message to anyone who may consider pulling a similar stunt in the future. This is just the latest in a series of food tampering incidents that have made national headlines.
Bender apologized to the court and claims his actions were stupid. He was fired, as were two other workers on his shift. An internal investigation determined the prank was an isolated incident.
These “isolated incidents” certainly makes one leery about dining out, lest we get an extra bonus of biological residue that we did not order. Consumer advocates are calling for the installation of closed circuit cameras in the food preparation areas of all restaurants.
