Indigestion, or also known as Dyspepsia is not is a disease, it is rather a medical condition where your stomach fails to digest the food you consumed. If you feel that your upper abdominal area is abnormally full and burning or recurrent pain, dyspepsia is in imminent and just about to give you a big blow. Dyspepsia can be caused by digestive tract condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or sometimes, peptic ulcer disease. There are also times that there’s no known cause for a specific person’s indigestion. This is known as functional dyspepsia. There are also ways to prevent upsetting your stomach, like avoiding certain food groups. Here are some examples.

Fatty Foods. Avoid greasy foods or foods that are high in fat. Foods that are high in fat content like fried foods can stir acid output in your gut. Fatty foods could also slowdown digestion. Aside from fried foods. Also rich in saturated fats are cheese, meat products,  mayonnaise, margarine, egg yolk, pizza, and chocolate. Be cautious because besides indigestion, these food groups create pockets of unwanted bulges and increase cholesterol levels, bad for the health.

Acidic Foods. Foods that are high in acidic content may also induce acid indigestion. This includes acidic fruits or citrus fruits like oranges, lemon, pineapple and even vegetable like tomato can irritate your lower esophagus that may eventually lead to acid indigestion.

Caffeine. Foods and beverages that contain caffeine should be avoided. Caffeine doesn’t help in relaxing your stomach muscles. Foods and beverages in this category include coffee, colas, and tea.

Sweets. Natural and artificial sweeteners are included in this food list to be avoided. Sugar can increase gastric mucosal secretions causing a person to experience indigestion. Sweet foods that are high in sugar content increases acidity and increased production and activity of gastric juices. Sweet foods that should be avoided are candies, donuts, ice cream, syrups, chocolate, fructose, among others.

While avoiding these foods that may induce reflux and indigestion, you should also remember to increase your intake of alkaline foods that neutralizes the acid activity on your stomach. Increase your consumption of raw vegetables like lettuce, spinach, cabbage, potatoes, mushrooms, and carrots. You could also have fruits that are not acidic like avocado, apples, berries, banana, etc.

Indigestion can be prevented if you take control of your diet. Sometimes, a balanced meal can help soothe your tummies. Don’t upset your stomach by consuming everything you see on the table because you’ll be the one suffering in the end. Feed you tummy well, not your eyes.
