When nine police officers in the small town of Claire, Michigan discovered their 113-year-old bakery and donut shop would be the sixth empty storefront in Clare’s three-block main drag, they pitched in and bought the donut shop. “Not only was it our idea to save the bakery, but we also couldn’t let another business close down,” Brian Gregory, a police officer and part-owner of the bakery told 9and10news.
The cops renamed the bakery “Cops and Doughnuts” which opened last Wednesday and offers donuts, cookies, and assorted baked goods; the cops are also selling T-shirts that say “You Have The Right to Remain Glazed” from their website.
The cops explain their story this way:
What began as a crazy idea among police friends is quickly becoming an international phenomenon. There is a doughnut shop and bakery in Clare, Michigan that has been in constant operation since 1896. This foundation business was within weeks of closing when the members of the Clare Police Department came to the rescue. All of them. That’s right, all nine members of the local police department banded together to save this historic business. Dubbed “Cops and Doughnuts,” the business boasts handmade confections of all types. Join us for a warm fresh doughnut and a steaming cup of coffee while you enjoy the police decor and friendly, and very safe, atmosphere.
