Movies that will put you in a New York State of Mind

Both New York Natives and potential tourists alike should get a kick out of becoming acquainted with some of Ontman’s picks and descriptions of well-known New York bars and restaurants frequently used for scenes in movies.

1) Katz’s Delicatessen – “When Harry Met Sally”
205 Houston St.

If you haven’t seen “When Harry Met Sally” yet, you should definitely queue it up on your Netflix account tonight. And if you haven’t had one of Katz’s highly exalted pastrami sandwiches yet, you probably should hail a cab or hop on a Citi Bike and head Downtown immediately.

Movie Scene: Look out for the table where Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal sat and chatted in the movie. (There’s a sign in the restaurant that reads, “Where Harry met Sally…hope you have what she had!”)

2) Coyote Ugly Saloon – “Coyote Ugly”
153 First Ave.

Made famous by the movie of the same name, “Coyote Ugly” is a classic dive bar/dirty saloon for cheap drinks and low-maintenance fun. Prepare to witness a few dozen women’s undergarments hanging from the ceiling, as well as a few animated bar-top dancers.

Movie Scene: This is where Piper Perabo gets her start in NYC, as a dancer/bartender at Coyote Ugly.

3) 21 Club – “Wall Street”
21 W. 52nd St.

Once a speakeasy in the 1920’s, the 21 Club is the oldest restaurant in Manhattan that received its name from its address. The hotspot has been a highly desired location for filming a multitude of movies, but perhaps one of the better-known is “Wall Street” (1987).

Movie Scene: In the movie, Michael Douglas’s character mentions that the steak tartare is still one of their best and most popular dishes.

4) Joe’s Pizza – “Spiderman”

Nothing compares to a New York slice of pizza, and filmmakers are well aware of that. Joe’s Pizza has multiple locations throughout the city, but the most famous one is also the site of Peter Parker’s temporary employment as a delivery boy.

Movie Scene: In Spiderman, Peter Parker briefly works as a delivery boy at Joe’s Pizza Downtown.

When the young and naive Andy Sachs becomes Miranda Priestly’s assistant, the job “a million girls would die to have,” she find herself forced to devote a serious chunk of off-duty leisurely time to work.

Movie Scene: In “The Devil Wears Prada,” Andy finds down time with her friends at Bubby’s. (Her hangout is cut short when the boss from hell calls her with an “emergency.”)

6) Smith & Wollensky’s – “American Psycho”
797 Third Ave.

One of the most famous steakhouses in the city, Smith and Wollensky’s is not only a prime spot for a prime rib, but a multitude of movie scenes as well. Many characters have had serious conversation or held business meeting at one of the tables in the steakhouse.

Movie Scene: In the 2000 film “American Psycho,” Christian Bale (who plays Patrick Bateman, the insane serial killer) orders his steak without hash-browns when dining at Smith & Wollensky’s.

7) Cafe Lalo – “You’ve Got Mail”

The self-proclaimed “most famous cafe in NYC,” is a cozy place well-known for its multiple movie cameos as well as its selection of over a hundred tasty desserts.

Movie Scene: Tom Hanks goes to Cafe Lalo to meet Meg Ryan for the first time in the movie “You’ve Got Mail,” before realizing his internet lover is his coworker.

8) Russian Tea Room – “Tootsie”
150 W. 57th St.

The site for martinis for the Gossip Girl cast as well as temporary employment for Madonna before she reached her star status, The Russian Tea Room has long been a place for celebrities, writers, and performers.

Movie Scene: In the 1982 movie “Tootsie,” Dustin Hoffman takes on the identity of a woman in order to salvage his acting career. One of the most famous scenes in the comedy (pictured left) was filmed at the Russian Tea Room.

9) Boiler Room – “P.S. I Love You”
86 E. 4th St.

An alternative, mellow lounge bar with cheap drinks, the Boiler Room was also the spot for filming a scene from “P.S. I Love You.” Studded with stars such as Gerard Butler, Hilary Swank and Lisa Kudrow, the dark bar was a perfect fit for the dramatic comedy.

Movie Scene: In “P.S. I Love You,” Hilary Swank holds the funeral reception at the Boiler Room.

10) Serendipity 3 – “Serendipity”
225 E. 60th St.

In the 2001 movie, “Serendipity,” the= sweet shop Serendipity 3 was the scene for one of many chance encounters between John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.

Movie Scene: The actors indulged in the restaurant’s famous Frozen Hot Chocolate before parting ways without each other’s phone numbers. The table at which they chatted is now nicknamed the Star table.
