New Year's Ball, Times Square
Ball shaped appetizers to set the mood

Whether you’re spending a quiet night at home, collecting and receiving some food coupons or hosting a gathering of friends, deciding what dishes to prepare for New Year’s is likely to be a high priority for most foodies. This holiday, why not draw upon some of the traditional New Year’s foods and give them a modern twist, so you can help usher in 2010 with a celebratory bang?   Here are some suggestions from our archives that fit the bill.

New Year’s Appetizer Spinach Balls – Since green, leafy vegetables are said to be reminiscent of folded money, these spinach balls are an excellent way to start the New Year on a prosperous note.

New Year’s Appetizer Knockwurst Bites – Pigs are also a sign of prosperity, so be sure to serve lots of knockwurst bites to your guests.  In addition to being tasty little morsels, they are thought to bring good fortune for the coming year.

New Year’s Salad – This recipe uses beans, another traditional New Year’s food.  Besides being tasty, beans are high in protein and fiber.

New Year’s Appetizer – Grandma’s Mock Chicken Legs – This recipe uses ground pork (one of the primary foods for New Year’s) to simulate chicken legs.  (Remember, it is not recommended you eat chicken on New Year’s because of their propensity to scratch backwards!)

New Year’s Appetizer Bacon Dip – Get with the bacon craze and serve this tasty and pork-infused appetizer dip.  Make a double serving, as it is likely to be a runaway hit.

Fruit Wreath – A crispy sweet treat, this wreath dovetails with the tradition of serving round cakes and pastries at the beginning of the year, which symbolizes the circle of life and new beginnings.

Regardless of what you decide to serve for New Year’s, make sure you toast 2010 with a glass of champagne!   And if you have any favorite New Year’s recipes that you’d like to share, log in to FriendsEat.com and let us know!
