What’s in a Word?

Dictionaries can be an interesting lot. As a foodie, there are so many terms in food and cooking that I’d need to know about. Terms like saute, poach, and fold are just some things that any self-respecting food lover should know about.

Words and meanings constantly evolve. Some enter the picture while others fade away. And there is that occasional oddity that gets into the list that never fails to amuse. Just take the Oxford Dictionary as an example. The dictionary had just announced a couple of new words, with some leanings on the food side. Even their definitions are entertaining as it is.

Here is a list of new terms you might want to know:

Banh mi:

A Vietnamese snack consisting of a baguette (traditionally baked with both rice and wheat flour) filled with a variety of ingredients, typically including meat, pickled vegetables, and chilli:

Along with classic banh mi, there are refreshing cold noodles and exceptional bowls of soup

Taquitos:

A fried corn or flour tortilla, filled usually with beef or chicken and cheese, rolled up, and dipped in a form of salsa, or guacamole.

Kleftiko:

A Greek dish consisting of lamb marinated with lemon juice and herbs and cooked slowly in a sealed container.

Origin:
Greek klephtiko, from klephtikos ‘relating to the klephts’

Eton mess:

A dessert consisting of a rough mixture of whipped cream, pieces of meringue, and fruit, typically strawberries.

Doughnut Hole:
[Noun]
It occurs when Medicare temporarily stops paying for drug prescriptions. If one is in the donut hole, he will have to pay the entire cost of his medications.

California roll:
[Noun]
A popular form of sushi made of avocado, crabmeat, carrot, and cucumber and wrapped in vinegared rice and nori (red algae)
