Uses for Cotton Swabs: Getting a Free Meal

They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but a jobless Taiwanese man proved that old adage wrong.  The homeless man had just been released from prison after stealing a pair of shoes, but the box lunch that he was served while behind bars was so memorable, that he subsequently stole a box of cotton swabs just so he would be rearrested.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and this hungry man was definitely desperate.  The lure of police department boxed lunches was too tempting to ignore, so he resorted to stealing the next day just so he could get back inside and eat for free.

It may not  be a four-star gourmet meal, but if you’re hungry, it tastes divine.

According to Reuters, the police look after those who are down and out.  “If someone is not doing well and comes in around meal time, we’ll definitely prepare food,” said an officer at the Hsinyi District police station, which handled the case but again released the suspect, Tsou Hao-lan.

The falling demand for Taiwanese electronics overseas is causing a flurry of activity at local prisons.  In a similar story, a jobless man stole a motor scooter and drove it to a Taipei-area police station, hoping to get arrested so he could have free food and shelter.

In this case, it certainly looks like there is such a thing as a free lunch and that crime really does pay.
