Fighting the Economy with Discounted Wine

The National Restaurant Association’s performance index shows that the restaurant industry has been shrinking for 23 months in a row. High-end bistro sales are off by 20 percent or more.

Le Bouchon Breton, which opened in Spitalfields Market on October 2008, and overlooks the Covered Victorian Marketplace at 8 Horner Square in east London, is slashing the price of its fine wines to draw in customers. Le Bouchon Breton, the big sister to Le Bouchon Bordelais in Clapham, is the brainchild of restaurateur Ian Stoppani and Michel Roux Jr — a two star Michelin Guide French chef.

Among the bargains are La Tache, Domaine de la Romanee Conti 1995, down to 1,293 pounds ($2,150) from 3,900 pounds, and Charmes-Chambertin, Domaine Perrot-Minot 2001, cut to 105 pounds from 220 pounds. Executive Sommelier Donald Edwards offers a 700 bin wine list full of all the big French Wines and a selection of world wines, including 40 champagnes and 40 cocktails.

Time will tell if this is the way to battle the economic downturn.
