Seems Toxic Waste® Brand Candy Bars are, well…Toxic

The Food and Drug Administration reports that Circle City Marketing and Distributing, an Indianapolis company doing business as Candy Dynamics, issued a voluntary recall of all Toxic Waste® brand Nuclear Sludge® Chew Bars, all flavors, Net wt. 0.7 oz (20 g) package. The product is imported from Pakistan.

A recent test performed by the California Department of Public Health indicates that lot (#8288A) of the cherry flavor bars contain levels of lead above U.S. FDA tolerance levels; the elevated levels could potentially cause health problems, particularly for infants, small children, and pregnant women.

The FDA claims Candy Dynamics will recall all lots and all flavors of the product distributed from the product’s inception in 2007 through January 2011. The recalled Nuclear Sludge„¢ Chew Bars were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail orders.

The products are identified as: Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Cherry Chew Bar (UPC 0 89894 81430 6), Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Sour Apple Chew Bar (UPC 0 10684 81410 7), and Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Blue Raspberry Chew Bar (UPC 0 89894 81420 7). Each chew bar has a net wt. of 0.7 oz (20 g).

Ingredients in Toxic Waste® brand Nuclear Sludge Bars

Even if Toxic Waste brand Nuclear Sludge Bars didn’t contain lead, check out (what should be the toxic) ingredients in their Blue Raspberry, Cherry, and Green Apple Nuclear Sludge Bars:

Sugar, Liquid Glucose, Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil, Citric Acid, Glycerin, Maltodextrin, Gum Arabic, Artificial Flavors, Lactic Acid, Soya Lecithin, Artificial Colors (Blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5, and Red 40), and soy.

Another of their tantalizing selections is Hi-Voltage„¢ Bubble Gum, Ingredients: Sugar, Gum Base, Corn Syrup, Dextrose, Citric Acid, Artificial Flavor, Coconut Oil, BHA and BHT (preservatives), Artificial Colors (Yellow 5, Red 40, Blue 1).

Refined sugar and liquid glucose are the the main ingredients in the Nuclear Sludge Bars, coupled with artificial flavors — most artificial flavors are petroleum derivatives — followed by a host of chemical food colorants.

Banned in Norway and Austria, Tartrazine is a commonly used food colorant all over the world, mainly for yellow, but can also be used with FD&C Blue 1, E133 or Green S E142 to produce various green shades; Tartrazine is a coal-tar derivative linked to asthma attacks and urticaria, thyroid tumors, chromosomal damage, lupus and hyperactivity.

In June of 2010, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) urged the FDA to ban three of the most commonly used dyes: Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6.

A CSPI report claims these dyes contain known carcinogens and contaminants that increase the risks of cancer, hyperactivity in children and allergic reactions.

The Food Standards Agency, an independent government agency in Great Britain, also suggests a link between hyperactivity in children and food coloring.

Lead Affects on Health

According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, lead can affect almost every organ and system in the body. The main target for lead toxicity is the nervous system, both in adults and children.

Exposure to high lead levels can severely damage the brain and kidneys in adults or children and ultimately cause death. In pregnant women, high levels of exposure to lead may cause miscarriage. High level exposure in men can damage the organs responsible for sperm production.

Unsafe levels of Lead in Most Kid’s Drinks/Snacks

Food is the major source of exposure to lead in humans, and Toxic Waste brand Nuclear Sludge Chew Bars are by no means alone when it comes to unsafe levels of lead.

Last June, Jasmin Malik Chua, writing for the parenting focused website inhabitots.com, cited a study by the Environmental Law Foundation (ELF), the San Francisco Bay Area-based environmental nonprofit, which enlisted the aid of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-certified lab in Berkeley.

ELF tested nearly 400 samples from 150 branded products marketed to children, including apple juice, grape juice, packaged pears and peaches (including baby food), and fruit cocktail mixes.

“The alarming results: 125 out of 146 products (pdf)”or more than 85%”contained enough lead in a single serving to warrant a warning label under California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known as Prop. 65.”

Even so-called organic products such as Earth’s Best Organic, 365 Everyday Value Organic, Trader Joe’s, and Walnut Acres had unsafe levels of lead. As Chua points out: most scientists concur that no safe level of exposure to lead exists, especially when it comes to babies and children.
