This Lenten Season: Keep it Smaller, Keep it Simpler

Keep it light during lent

What do diets and the Lenten season have in common? Well, not much, unless you’re trying to lose a few pounds. In that case, Lent may be your best friend in 2010. Those looking to give something up for their seasonal sacrifice, might consider abstaining from those food products that pack on the pounds and are bad for your health. Consider this: by cutting out just one of your guilty pleasures, you could conceivably lose as much as 10 pounds by the time Easter gets here. Couple that with some of the traditional fasting, and watch your weight plummet! Talk about killing two birds with one stone!

During the Easter season, fasting and abstinence go hand and hand, but not everyone is clear about the difference, so here is a simple explanation. Abstinence lowers the quality of food (i.e. by not eating chocolate, pasta or meat — whatever your guilty pleasure) while fasting lowers the quantity. Some individuals may choose to fast all day until the evening meal; others may eat only a light breakfast and dinner.

Habits that you put in place during the Lenten season could serve you well during the rest of the year and reinforce good and healthy eating habits. This spring, adopt the rule of “keep it smaller, keep it simpler”
