Last Friday was more than just National Donut Day, which is celebrated on the first Friday in June since it was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to raise money during the Great Depression. Last Friday was the day Dunkin’ Donuts announced the winner of the “Create Dunkin’s Next Donut” contest which involved nearly 130,000 donut contest creations submitted online. The big winner eliminated eleven other batter and frosting finalists to take home $12,000 in winnings. (See Jeff Hager’s YouTube Video)
Jeff Hager’s “Toffee for Your Coffee” donut was the Grand Prize Winner and will be offered for sale at Dunkin’ Donut shops in the fall. “Toffee for Your Coffee” is a glazed, sour cream cake donut topped with chopped Heath Bar nuts. “Glazed sour cream donuts are my absolute favorite,” says Hager. “Heath toffee is by far the best candy treat, and Dunkin’ Donuts sells the best coffee. Put that all together and you’ve got ‘Toffee For Your Coffee!’”
The Birmingham News reports Hager is a 41-year old chief financial officer whose affinity for Dunkin’ goes back to his childhood in Montgomery. Hager claims “he entered the contest after he and his wife, Angela, watched a Dunkin’ Donut television commercial and went online to find a shop near Hoover. He said there is one in Dothan”.
“It’s been a very surreal experience,” said Hager in a telephone interview. “I really thought it would be good when I created it, but when I actually tested it the first time, it really blew me away.”
In addition to the prize money, Chainleader.com says Hager traveled to Dunkin’ Donuts’ headquarters in Canton, Massachusetts for a bake-off before Dunkin’ Donuts’ culinary team and company leaders, along with Paul Mullins, author of Glazed America: A History of the Doughnut.
