Interview with Food Blogger Edinburgh Foody

Sure I love the food world, but it has become watered down and downright insipid. One of the reasons I get so excited when I come upon a really good food blog. One of these is Edinburgh Foody. You just have to love when someone is not afraid to tackle topics such as “Could you butcher a pig?” and then moves onto topics such as “Useful kitchen gadgets: garlic saucer”. I knew this would get onto my daily read list. So just how does someone become a really flavorful, juicy food blogger? Read on…

FriendsEAT: Where did you grow up?

Edinburgh Foody: In Surrey, England

FE: What inspired you to start a food blog?

EF: I ran a company organising food tours and event in Edinburgh which I sold in 2007. I found that I really missed discovering all the wonderful produce we have and even more so the fantastic people involved in producing and cooking the food, that I started writing again.

FE: What field of food does your blog focus on and why?

EF: It’s great do dine out and review restaurants, but for me, I like to know more. I like to know where chefs get their inspiration; the reason why someone of retirement age takes on a new career raising pigs and to taste and discover new foods and flavours.

FE: What is a typical day in your life like?

EF: Busy as you can imagine. In addition to food, I have a passion for marketing and social media which takes up quite a bit of time!

FE: What was your childhood kitchen like?

EF: My mother was a great cook so she had plenty of pots, pans and useful gadgets, such as a meat mincer, a girdle (this is spelt correctly, it is for making Scotch pancakes) and such like. I am proud to say I have many of those items and use them today.

FE: What is your kitchen like now?

EF: My pride and joy have to be my Magimix and my Smeg cooker. I have rather too many pots, pans and tins and gadgets (all useful of course!)

FE: What type of people read your blog?

EF: A really good mixture. People who love food, but do not love to cook. Others who travel and love eating out. Still more who enjoy cooking. All people with enquiring minds.

FE: What comes to mind when you hear the word bacon?

EF: I have to say since I recently wrote a post about butchering a pig (which was a fantastic experiece) it’s where the bacon actually comes from.

FE: What is your favorite restaurant and why?

EF: A very difficult choice. Most recently we drove 6 hours to eat at Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham. It was well worth the drive. He uses plenty of new techniques and special equipment to create food that is subtle and delicious. Cutting edge, yet accessible.

FE: What is your favorite ingredient and why?

EF: Again, this changes regularly,  but at the moment my heritage tomatoes!

FE: What is your opinion of the current state of Foodtertainment?

EF: There are food shows I watch, and others I don’t. Many have really changed the way we look at and treat food – thank goodness!

FE: What do you think is the future of food blogging in the next 5 years?

EF: I do hope it continues! There is such a wonderful community of foodies out there who I really enjoy interacting with and learning from. The format may change, but people who love food will always write about it.

FE: Would you like to give a shout out to the best joint that no one has heard about?

EF: I’ve probably written about too many of these, but I would recommend anyone who visits Edinburgh to seek out Cedric Minel of the curiously named Cheesee Peasey on Meadow Place on Saturdays from about 11 am. He has a traditional French cheese van stocked with the highest quality French cheeses. He’s also just branched out into macarons which are absolutely out of this world.

FE: What do you think is the most important issue facing foodies today?

EF: Having their passion thwarted by councils who don’t want you to park near the farmers’ markets
