It’s supposed to be another scorcher today and I can’t think of anything better to do than play hookie and make some ice cream. No matter which flavor if your favorite, this creamy treat can bring respite from the sweltering heat and suffocating humidity. Your basic ice cream recipe will include milk, cream and sugar plus flavor. I’m going to give you a way to make your tasty treat. The results are so incredibly worth it.The key is to freeze and whip at the same time to reach the perfect consistency. We’ll start with vanilla, it’s pretty easy to alter the flavors after that.
Making Ice Cream Sans Machine
2 cups half and half
1 cup whipping cream
1 cup of sugar
1 vanilla bean
Split and scrape the vanilla bean.
Mix all the ingredients together in a sauce pan.
Heat to 170 F (Do not let it boil)
Remove from heat and let cool.
Discard the shell of the vanilla bean.
Put in your fridge overnight in a container with a tight fitting lid.
Put it in the freezer for about 45 minutes.
If the edges have started to freeze, stir it to break up anything that is frozen.
Do this every 30 minutes for about three hours (a hand held mixer would come in handy right about now).
When the ice cream has reached the consistency you like, it is ready.
To change flavors or add fruits, add them to the almost frozen mixture. Chop up strawberries, drizzle chocolate, play and have fun.
If you are at all like me, then you have very little patience. This is where an ice cream maker can come in handy. Sure it’s a unitasker, but when it’s hot who wants to do the work? Stick with the electric kind, using the manual can be just as much work as making it by hand. Electric machines are pretty easy to use. Just add your mixture and in 30 minutes you have your ice cream. Need some ice cream recipes? Look no further.
