A Massachusetts housewife and mother of 4, Kathy Spencer, has beat the coupon game, or so she claims. Spencer says she’s discovered how to feed her family of six for less than ten dollars a week by purchasing grocery items in bulk when items are on sale and using coupons to bring down the cost.

On a shopping trip in Seabrook, New Hampshire, Spencer took home $279 in groceries for 39 cents. Gail Huff, the reporter who accompanied her on the trip, vouches for the savings, “I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen it.” Spencer claims she mails in a rebates, and freezes everything.

Spencer scours newspapers, grocery stores and manufacturers’ Web sites for coupons and swears her grocery bill averages four dollars a week. She has developed a cult of thousands on her website and on Yahoo Groups.
