Seriously, maybe it’s time to become a vegan.

At least three supermarket chains and their subsidiaries are recalling beef products that originated at the JBS Swift Company in Colorado, which recently announced that almost 425,000 pounds of beef processed at their plant may have been contaminated by the potentially deadly e.Coli bacteria.   At least 24 individuals reported becoming ill from eating the beef, 12 were hospitalized and two of them were diagnosed with kidney failure.

Hannaford Brothers, a Maine-based grocery chain with stores in the New England area issued a recall of approximately 380,000 pounds of beef that came from the Colorado plant.  Customers holding packages of Hannaford beef with a “Sell by”date between April 28 and June 6 will receive a refund or replacement.

Other supermarket chains recalling beef processed at the JBS Swift plant include Kroger’s stores in parts of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Illinois and Mississippi.   Kroger’s said the suspect beef was sold under its store brand name in more than a dozen states.   Food 4 Less stores in the Chicago area, Fry’s stores in Arizona and Smith’s stores in Arizona, Utah and other western states were also included in the recall.  Massachusetts-based Stop & Shop is also recalling beef products traced to the JBS Swift operation.  Stop & Shop has stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

This recall comes on the heels of the recall of Nestle’s Toll House refrigerated cookie dough, which was also pulled off store shelves because of the potentially deadly e.Coli bacteria.

E. coli symptoms include bloody diarrhea and dehydration and in severe cases, kidney failure.  Those exhibiting these symptoms should consult a doctor.  Young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to bacterial infections.
