Brain Hemorrhage Anyone?

This cocktail will please all brain eaters alike.

We’re just about a week away from Halloween.  This year’s holiday falls on a Saturday, so next weekend will be prime time for parties organized around spooky themes.

If you’ve decided to host a party this Halloween, you probably have worked hard to develop your menu and the type of food and treats you’ll be serving. Many traditional and favorite recipes come to mind, but don’t forget the your drink selections!  Have you considered what type of adult (i.e. “alcoholic”) beverages will go along with your Halloween cuisine?

Halloween, with its “anything goes” motif, is the perfect holiday to experiment with color, flavor and secret ingredients that can help create a spooky atmosphere, converting common drinks into deliciously eerie concoctions.

Even the most common cocktails can be converted into Halloween-themed drinks with a little thought and imagination. Think about how you can use color, texture and surprise edible ingredients to turn run-of-the-mill cocktails turn into tantalizing and irresistible thirst quenchers.

For starters, consider using some of the following when deciding your drink menu for your Halloween soiree.

  • Tomato juice or cherry Jell-O (to simulate blood)
  • Kahlua (for dark, vampire-style drinks)
  • Lime Jello (for “slime”)
  • Food coloring (to add color to clear colored beverages)
  • Whipped cream or Kool Whip (to provide floating texture)
  • Assorted creepy candy, such as gummy worms and spiders, edible “eyeballs”, etc.

Keep in mind that there are many inexpensive decorations that can add to a Halloween theme, such as mini-skeletons that hang off the rim of a glass, or black cat cocktail stirrers.

You should also stock up on inexpensive, throwaway rubber gloves, which can be filled with punch, soda, Kool-Aid or other liquid ingredients, frozen, and then positioned in the middle of a punch bowl filled with your favorite drinkable refreshment.  You can also fill the rubber gloves with Jello, chill until solid, and place the jellied hand precipitously in a bowl of punch or alongside creepy appetizers.

To get you started, FriendsEat.com has a collection of beverage recipes ready for you to try for your holiday happenings.  But don’t stop with these recipes!  We urge you to think outside the proverbial pumpkin and create some of your own eerie combinations to share with us on FriendsEat.com.
