Seasonings: Faux or Fact

Seasonings must have been the most traditional food additives that every cook infuse to create blasting dishes. In the olden days, where technology wasn’t much a concern, natural seasonings include the bounties of the soil such as herbs and spices that abound. Food was always a delightful and delectable treat for gastronomes. People did not know about “eating out of the box”because home was always the best venue to satisfy the pangs of hunger and gastronomic delights. Also, authentic traditions in cooking were held by generations without the slightest hint of commercialization.

The onset of technology brought a radical change in humanity’s attitude towards food. The simple traditions of using only natural seasonings induced a switch in food preferences. Little did people know that modernization actually made a huge impact on how food is being prepared with the use of modern technologies and the birth of processed commercial seasonings. Thus, the world also changed in its outlook for taste and flavors. I am not saying that technology is negative. As a foodie, my concern is how fast these faux seasonings have crawled into the consciousness of people, and health is fast taking the back seat.

Admittedly, along with modernization and technology is the influx of commercial food seasonings in the market. Each brand claims to be the practical option for what is supposed to be natural and healthy. Life itself took the fast lane which has become a practical alibi to go for processed food. Home cooking was not spared. Commercial seasonings now have a nook in the kitchen. The demand for seasonings must have replaced nature’s bounties which remains incomprehensible to me as a foodie. What is better than natural?

Practical and convenience may have been the reasons why commercial seasonings have proliferated in the market. Add to that, tri-media advertisements and hypes have, in a way, penetrated and influenced the minds of many moms, cooks and even kids, contributing to the shift of the mindset from natural to faux. Instant food and eating it fresh from the box is practical. The microwave is the best thing to have for that. It does not take much time and effort to prepare and cook. You get your meal quick and easy.

Seasonings: Faux or Fact

But are we aware of what’s in the food? Labels can speak but these mislead too. There is nary a trace of natural ingredient, only seasonings and food preservatives. Chemical-based and highly commercialized because the seasonings are really made of that stuff. We eat because we need food to keep us on the go. Simply put, eat to be healthy to live well. Feeding on foods that are rich in commercial seasonings will never compare with those that have natural ingredients and seasonings blended.

Taste is a personal conviction. It depends on the person’s preference and diet structure. Flavor is adjustable to the person’s needs and wants, as well. Aroma is one of the natural seasoning’s abilities, real and tempting. How can you get natural taste, flavor and aroma when the seasonings you use are fakes? That itself is a contradiction. One fact that faux seasonings carry is empty on nutrients, only rich in sodium and chemicals.

The primary reason for eating should benefit the body. Eating is a primal necessity to survive. In this fast-paced world, eating preferences and habits must be more attuned to sound mind and body. It would be difficult to catch up if health is compromised. Food is a constant item in the basket of goods where money is spent. This fact alone must guide us to choose between natural and commercial ingredients in the food we eat. Don’t catch the bait of empty promises that commercial seasonings bring. The perfect prize of good health comes only from what we eat, the more natural way. Creativity in cooking and a dash of love will make your dishes blast, the natural way.
