FDA Gets Tougher of Food Standards: Can They Pull It Off?

Consider ourselves lucky. Last January 4, 2011, President Obama had signed into law the Food Safety Act. This came amid years of strong-arming the countries and decades spent in persuading the Congress to even just read the first page. With the Food Safety act , the Food and Drug Administration  gains additional teeth against companies.

FDA Gets Tougher of Food Standards: Can They Pull It Off?Now, they have the legal grounds to announce a recall, more power to inspect imported foods, and establish more food safety testing safety facilities around the world. Of course, there is one small snag. They’ll have to work on a miserly Congres s so that they would release approximately$4.1 billion dollars to fund the program for the next five years.

For the bean crunchers in Congress, that is a very staggering amount. With the government tightening their belts, it’s not surprising that they would be unwilling to release such a huge amount. The US financial system is still not out of the woods, yet, so the federal government would need to shore up whatever funds they possess and then proceed to spend it carefully.

But it can’t be helped. The FDA needs new inspectors, doctors, and other personnel in order for them to maximize the powers given to them by the law. If the government really wants to help its people then they should do start shelling out the needed funds. In the long run, it can be of use to the government. The amount spent by government in public health care has already amounted to hundreds of billions of dollars. By implementing the law more efficiently, the government would be able to make a lot of savings.

Foodborne diseases always loom over the health of every American. It’s a virtual ticking time-bomb. It is hoped that through this law (and a better funded FDA), we can throw this bomb in a bucket of cold water.
