One thing that pleases me immensely is seeing my friends children growing up to be full on foodies. It was so cute to see my friend’s daughter flip out over gherkins and pate. We introduced my niece to wild boar at A Voce and now she is game for anything. If you are looking to build your child into a full on gourmand; who is not afraid to try anything and can survive at any party with ease; start them early. These are some great events in NYC for the junior Top Chef in you home:
Children’s Museum of Manhattan (212 W 83rd Street): Bean Appetit: Hip & Healthy Ways to Have Fun with Food. Bean Sprouts, a healthy kids cafe & cooking school will be at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan the Saturday after Thanksgiving to lead cooking demos specially designed for kids. This is done in conjunction with the CMOMs “Eat Sleep Play initiative.” The event if free – just the cost of getting into the museum if you are not a member.
Donatella D Bar: 184 8th Avenue (between 19th & 20th): Donatella Arpaia’s Piccolo Pizzaiolo children’s pizza making class is back by demand. The classes will take place every Saturday from October to December. It’s a great way to keep the kids occupied (and warm) this winter. For more information call Michelle Owen #212-493-5150. Price is $50 per child. Payment is cash only but a credit card number is required to hold the space.
Metropolitan Pavilion: (125 W 18th St. #804): What kid would not love The New York Chocolate Show? This event will take place from November 10 to 13. Don’t worry, it’s more than just a sugar fest. Your budding foodie will be instructed on the art of cocoa while having fun. It’s also affordable: children are free with a two child per adult limit, $8 per additional child (5 years to 12 years).
Madeline Tea at The Carlyle: (35 E 76th Street): This is an event that even I want to attend. The party will feature a three-tiered tea, served among the Madeline murals, on Madeline-inspired linen and china. The menu includes Bemelmans teeny burgers, Pepitos crudités & Dips, petite banana splits fontainebleau, and Eiffel Tower hot fudge sundae (with a Cherry on top). Reservations are required. To reserve call 212.744.1600. The cost is $65 per person, $25 for children under 3 years.
