To Make Sure You Aren't Naughty
And let the parties begin!
Yes, the holiday parties are starting, and we’re all rummaging through our closets, digging out the snowman vests and Santa hats, as well as the rest of our brightest Christmas finery. After attending the never-ending schedule of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Year’s parties, we are going to feel like beached whales by the time 2010 gets here.
So how can we, as serious foodies, get through the season without exploding? It takes a firm commitment to take control of our party behavior, striking a balance between eating everything in sight and swearing off anything except celery sticks.
Here are some tried and true tips to keep your waistline in check while you sample all the sweet and savory morsels at the numerous buffet tables.
Practice portion control – This is the key to managing your weight over the holidays. Don’t pile up your plate; take a small sampling of whatever food you’d like to taste and refrain from going back for seconds or thirds. Spend your time mingling, not munching.
Adjust your attitude - Most people think they’ll eat whatever they want and worry about it later, which means mass crash diets in January that do not work. Embrace the season but practice portion control, which won’t make you feel deprived.
Keep hydrated - Drink plenty of water before you go to the party. This will make you feel full and keep you from stuffing yourself with empty calories. Limit alcoholic drinks to light beer and wine.
Get moving - Do some sort of moderate exercise every day during the holidays. Even 15 or 20 minutes a day will help rev up your metabolism and make you feel better.
Remain calm - Stress makes you eat, so if you can do something to unwind (listening to music, going for a walk, taking a bubble bath or practicing meditation), you are likely to have more control over your eating regimen.
The buffet will open in 10 minutes!
