Famous Chef Plans to Open Pizza Parlor in Spain

Ferran Adrià
Molecular Pizza Coming Soon

According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, Ferran Adria wants to open a pizza joint.  Adria is the chef at El Bulli, the winner of the 2009 San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants competition. He is known for his remarkable combination of tastes, textures and scientific presentations.  Adria’s foray into the world of pizza making would be … groundbreaking.

The renowned chef has been in Italy studying the art of pizza making.  His intention is to open a very plain pizza restaurant in Barcelona, without any of his well-known signature gimmicks, such as liquid nitrogen, foam and strange balls of flavor.

Italian chefs are miffed that he is attempting to hone in on their turf, and claim that it takes years .. even decades .. to perfect the pizza pie.   But for Adria, and his brother Roberto, who will be his partner, the new venture offers a chance to cook for far more people than the small number who eat at El Bulli each year.

In an unrelated report, Pizza Hut announced it would soon close 100 of its 134 outlets in Spain.

Hmmm.  I wonder if they’re afraid of the competition?
