Oaxaca cheese Takes a Hit
The Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall for various types of soft Mexican-style cheeses manufactured by Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese, in Reading, Michigan, due to possible listeria contamination. Sold under the name Aguas Calientes, the potentially contaminated items were distributed to retail stores and delis in the states of Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
The recalled items include:
• Queso Asadero, 12 oz. and 10 lb. balls
• Queso Oaxaca, 10 lb. ball
• Queso Fresco, 1 lb. and 8 oz.
• Queso Requeson, 1 gallon pail and 3 gallon pail
• Morral Adobera, 3 lb. packages
The packages may also be labeled with the name “Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese LLC” and include all expiration dates.
Although no illnesses from the cheese have been reported, the FDA cautions that consuming food contaminated with listeria can cause listeriosis, an uncommon, but potentially fatal disease. Symptoms include high fever; severe headaches, neck stiffness and nausea. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
Consumers who may have purchased any of these products are urged to return them to the retailer or to the manufacturer. Further questions may be directed to the Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese, LLC at 517-368-5990.
