JBS-Swift, a Colorado meat company expanded its recall of E.coli contaminated beef to 421,000 lbs, according to Reuters, even as the USDA lists the original 41,280 pounds that JBS had increased to 380,000, then 421,000. An investigation disclosed 18 possible illnesses linked to the beef. JBS-Swift originally recalled 380,000 lbs of assorted beef products on June 24. JBS Swift is a unit of Brazilian meat company JBS S.A.

“These beef products were produced on April 21 and 22, 2009, and were shipped to distributors and retail establishments in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin, according to the USDA.

According to Food Poison Journal, “Andrew Shain at The State newspaper in South Carolina unsuccessfully attempted last Friday to get a list of retailers in that state who carry meat from JBS Swift Beef Company’s Colorado plant. A JBS official told The State processors and stores they did not want their names released and would ‘contact the public as they see fit'”

Since the beef products in question were produced in the latter part of April, that means three full three months transpired before the problem was discovered through FSIS microbiological sampling, according the USDA’s own website.
