Butter and a butter knife

Paula Deen, move over.  As the self-proclaimed queen of all things butter, you’ve got some competition at this year’s Texas State Fair in Dallas.  One of the new food items making its debut is something near and dear to your heart ” butter.  Deep-fried butter.

Now we all know you have a recipe for deep-fried butter balls, but with all due respect, your recipe mixes cream cheese with the butter, so it really isn’t 100 percent pure.  That’s not the case with Abel Gonzalez Jr., the creator of the deep-fried butter that will be served at the fair, starting September 25 and running through October 18.

Gonzales is no stranger to artery-clogging concession concoctions.  The 39-year old Dallas resident already created deep-fried peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwiches, fried cookie dough and … fried Coke.  So why not deep-fried butter?

With one stick of butter containing 810 calories, Gonzales thoughtfully cut the count down by whipping, then freezing the butter.  He then takes scoops of the whipped butter and coats them in batter, before dropping them into the deep fryer.  Because plain butter can be rather uninteresting, his concoction will be available in three different flavors: sweet cream, cherry or garlic.

Gonzalez’s creation garnered the “Most Creative award in this year’s Big Tex Choice Awards, which determines which new food creations will be made available at the State Fair.  Fernie’s deep-fried peaches and cream was the winner for “Best Taste”

Fair patrons should stock up on cholesterol medication now if they plan to indulge in any of these artery-clogging treats.   It might also be a good idea to put your family doctor on your cell phone’s speed-dial .
