Tiny, tasty, and sweet bits of chocolates. You can have them as toppings, melted for your hot drinks, or even served on their own. They may be small in size, but chocolate chips sure more than make up for it with their flexibility.

Chocolate chips are the quintessential ingredient for desserts. Their tiny size and chocolaty goodness makes them ideal for many kinds of baked desserts. The most popular of them would be chocolate chip cookies.

Perhaps the first person to ever used chocolate chips would be Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1937. To give her cookies an extra touch of delectability, she used cut up pieces of Nestle chocolate bars to her batter. The resulting cookies were so popular that Nestle made a deal with her to put her recipe on the back of their chocolate bar packaging. In exchange, she was to be given a lifetime supply of chocolates.

Initially, the chocolate chips were made from whole Nestle chocolate bars (with a chipping tool provided). After that, Nestle and its competitors began to offer “chipped-down”pieces of chocolate in groceries. It was also at this time that the shapes began to evolve into the tear-drop shape tidbits that we are familiar today. In the beginning, semi-sweet chocolates were the only flavor. Now, we have bittersweet chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, mint chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, and even white and dark swirled chocolate chips.

Sweet, Sweet Chocolate ChipsBecause of their versatility, chocolate chips can be used in various recipes. The most popular of them would definitely be chocolate chips cookies. They are truly an American dessert, and one that you can find in almost every home. For those looking for a softer variant, then a chocolate chip cake would be in order. For a filling snack, you could also try baking chocolate chip muffins. These are best served with a glass of milk or a mug of coffee for breakfast. And since we’re talking about breakfast, then we also have chocolate chip pancakes. Kids love pancakes. You can imagine them loving it even more once you add chocolate chips in the mixture.
