Don't Worry, the jerky's on its wa

Two and a half pounds of beef jerky from Hamel’s Meats in Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada, will be on board the space shuttle Endeavour when it blasts into space this Wednesday, on its way to rendezvous with the International Space Station.  The jerky is the contribution of Canadian astronaut and flight engineer, Julie Payette, as part of a project that introduces authentic, yet space-friendly “comfort food” to the space station crew from the astronauts’ countries of origin.

Payette became a fan of the sweet and spicy treat when she was first training for the NASA space program in Cold Lake, and suggested the jerky for the project.  Although Hamel’s jerky has been feasted on in places as remote as Singapore and South Africa, this is the first time that it will be chowed down in outer space.

Also sharing the jerky treats will be fellow Canadian astronaut Bob Thirsk, who will be waiting at the space station when the Endeavour arrives.  Thirsk hitched a ride with the Soyuz space capsule, which took off from Kazakhstan. This is the first time two Canadian astronauts will be in space simultaneously – another reason to celebrate.  Payette also packed a few other Canadian goodies in her food hamper, including smoked salmon paté, maple butter, maple leaf cookies, bison pemmican and maple syrup.

Mmmmm.  When do we eat?
