According to a report in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, eating strawberries, cranberries, blackberries, blueberries, and grapes can help prevent age-related memory loss.

Based on a clinical studies, scientific evidence suggests antioxidants that are highly concentrated in berries have a direct effect on how neurons in the brain send signals.

The study reviews recent evidence for the beneficial signaling effects of berry fruits on the brain and behavior. Recent clinical trials have extended these antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cognition-sparing effects to humans.

The report notes increased lifespans have focused attention on concerns associated with old age, adding that a growing body of preclinical and clinical research has identified neurological benefits associated with the consumption of berry fruits.

“In addition to their now well-known antioxidant effects, dietary supplementation with berry fruits also has direct effects on the brain. Intake of these fruits may help to prevent age-related neurodegeneration and resulting changes in cognitive and motor function.

“In cell and animal models, berry fruits mediate signaling pathways involved in inflammation and cell survival in addition to enhancing neuroplasticity, neurotransmission, and calcium buffering, all of which lead to attenuation of age- and pathology-related deficits in behavior.”

Blanca’s Berry Tips

Berries Inhibit Age-Related Memory LossIn the winter (when most berries are not in season) pick up some cranberries. Buy berries that are ripe but not over ripe (maximum sweetness).

Wash your berries and store them in the fridge, try to eat them within two days. If you’re feeling bloated, pick up some raspberries.

Raspberries are mildly laxative and will reduce bloating. Cranberry juice is an alkaline, it balances a system that is too acidic (so it is great for heartburn and indigestion as well as bladder and urinary infections).
