Get ready for high tech in your local ramen joint

Being a line cook, server or bartender is not everyone’s aspiration, but it’s a great entry-level job for those who wish to work their way up in the restaurant industry.  No one can argue that the work is grueling and the hours even worse.  Chefs constantly walk around with their fingers crossed, hoping their staffers show up as scheduled, since dealing with sick, hung-over or no-show employees is one of the realities of running a restaurant.  Little do these workers realize that their lackadaisical attitude may be sabotaging their own success.

Thanks to the innovative thinking of Asian engineers, the future of the food service industry may be changing with the introduction of programmable robots, that are designed to replace the line cooks, bartenders and servers of the world.  Neat, clean, dependable and never late or hung over, chefs will program the robots with recipes or other kitchen tasks, and restaurant owners will no longer worry about employees showing up sober … or at all.

A $200,000 ramen robot is already in use at the Momozono Robot Ramen shop in Yamanashi, Japan.  Customers can order their noodles, broth and sauce on a computer screen and have their custom-made bowls delivered in about two minutes.  Yoshihira Uchida, who created the robot, claims that more than 40 million different flavors of Japan’s popular noodle dish can be attained by using his invention.

There are a number of robots already in the development and testing stages, including those that make pancakes, serve sushi, slice cucumbers, take drink orders and serve them.  These non-human substitutes may pose a threat to human staffers who not only screw up orders, but also do it with an attitude!
