Farm Sanctuary,  the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, is sponsoring its 28th annual Adopt-a-Turkey Project, which asks socially-conscious individuals to think outside the box this Thanksgiving and adopt a turkey instead of eat one.

Designed to bring awareness to and end the misery of commercially raised turkeys, the project requests a $25 donation to save a turkey from the wraths of the oven this season.  Rescued turkeys will be relocated to a new lifelong home at one of the Sanctuary’s facilities in either New York or California.

Since 1986, the Adopt-A-Turkey Project has rescued more than 1,000 birds.  Sponsors receive a certificate, color photo and a fun biography about their rescued bird.

Another component of the program is Turkey Express,  where rescued turkeys are offered for personal adoption to qualified individuals who promise to provide loving homes to the birds for the rest of their lives.  According to program officials, turkeys are friendly, social and sensitive animals.  This year, six special rescued birds named Bubbles, Mello, Rhonda, Gideon, Olive and Hawthorn will vie for the hearts of potential adopters.

The Adopt-A-Turkey Project also provides recipe alternatives to the traditional Thanksgiving meal, which will appeal to the taste buds of  both carnivores and vegans.
